What Is Decanting Wine?
Decanting wine is pouring wine from the original bottle to another container while not disturbing the sediment beneath. Wine is often decanted into a glass vessel with an easy-pour non drip neck.

Decanting serves two purposes: to separate wine from any sediment that may have formed and to aerate the wine in the hope that its aromas and flavors will be more vibrant upon serving.

Older red wines and Vintage Ports naturally produce sediment as they age (white wines rarely do); the color pigments and tannins bond together and fall out of solution. Stirring up the sediment when pouring will cloud a wine’s appearance and can impart bitter flavors and a gritty texture. It’s not harmful, but definitely less enjoyable.

Which Wines Do You Need to Decant?
From young wine to old wine, red wine to white wine and even rosés, most types of wine can be decanted. In fact, nearly all wines benefit from decanting for even a few seconds, if only for the aeration. However, young, strong red wines particularly need to be decanted because their tannins are more intense.

Which Wines Don’t Need Decanting?
The only wines that shouldn’t be decanted are sparkling wines, like Champagne. That’s because sparkling wines thrive most when they have their bounce, which decanting and aeration reduces (similar to how a soda goes flat when left out of the fridge for too long).
